As in year's past, our fabulous ex-neighbors/current friends kindly and generously invited us to spend a long Memorial Day weekend at their home on Lake Superior. This time around, though, Mama and I put on our shared maternal thinking cap and invited Grandma Kool along for the ride. Beaver Bay couples dinner and watered down gin and tonics at the local municipal bar, here we come!
Thinking we were soooo clever, the three grown ups hatched a Lili sleep plan prior to our departure from the Twin Cities. Having woken up at the crack of dawn's ass and also having refused a nap during the day, we figured all our little traveler needed was a tummy full of warm food and a fresh glass of milk before heading north, and she would be lulled quickly and angelically to sleep by the sun's setting rays and distant loon calls. Idiots. Total idiots. We will never learn, us grown ups. Three hours, a multitude of traffic jams, one emergency ditch side potty break, and several frayed mom nerves later, Lili was still wide awake and imploring everyone in the car to help her watch for pumas and wolves bounding out of the woods between Hinckley and Duluth. I'm fairly certain her eyes didn't actually close until she felt the pavement of cabin driveway beneath the back wheels.A real city girl, this one.
| "Sleep? Hmmm...let me check....no". |
| Mommy, silently begging for the sweet relief of the North Shore. Or the front seat of the car. |
Despite frigid temps, inadequate clothing, and insufficient sleep, we did manage to rally the next day (and the day after) and do some North Shore exploring/puma and wolf tracking. Neither was sighted, but Lili seemed pleased enough with the presence of a local ground squirrel and a rushing waterfall. And that Iron Range municipal bar? As awesome as you're imagining.
